Final Fantasy II is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was originally released in Japan in 1988, and later in North America in 1991 as part of the Final Fantasy series. The game features a story-driven gameplay with turn-based battles, where the player controls a group of characters who embark on a quest to save the world from evil forces. Final Fantasy II introduced various new gameplay mechanics to the series, including a unique character progression system where characters' abilities improve based on their usage in battle, as well as a morality system that affects the story's outcome.
